Ecuador • Family Food Production

Got to go down to Ecuador a few days before production started on this project so that we could meet some of the families we wanted to interview before the crew arrived. Having only taken two years of Spanish in high school, I tried my best to understand what was going on in the conversations, but Tyler, the producer, was fluent. At the end of the conversation at each of the homes we visited, I heard a similar word that I recognized—Miracles!

Each house was the same. Each ended with a similar expression. Tyler would question them, “Meercoles?” To which they would respond, “Si, si, miercoles.”

Finally when walking to yet another potential home I asked Tyler, “What are the miracles these people are talking about?”

He looked confused.

“Meercoles, meercoles… everyone’s saying meercoles” I stammered.

“Miercoles, Scott. Miercoles means Wednesday. I asked if we could come back on Wednesday.”
