Here are some fun BTS (behind the scenes) features as well as some classic commercials from my old advertising reel. I share the old commercials because even though it’s been more than 20 years, people still remember these—that’s the power of story! Hope you enjoy these.

BTS • Storyboard To Film Comparison
Thought you might enjoy this. A little bonus feature. When creating the short film, illuminares, I worked with, Glenn Harmon, an uber talented student artist to create the storyboards. They were exactly like I had pictured in my head. Then I worked with Brian Wilcox and later T.C. Christensen )because a snow delay pushed the production back a week and Brian became unavailable) to bring this to life. It’s amazing how each shot perfectly matches up with the storyboard. What an amazing experience. Hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look.

1998 commercial • I Will
This TV spot still amazes me because I can run into people who lived in Indiana in 1998 and they still remember this 15: second spot. I should point out that I was just the writer on this. Tom Oliphant was the director (and won “Director of the Year” honors in 1998, so we got him when he was still affordable).

1998 commercial • If I
In 1998 we were asked to create a series of TV, radio, print ads, and billboards… that honestly could have done more harm than good. We were asked by the Governor’s Council to run a campaign to stop teen pregnancy. Yikes. Imagine that! The government telling you not to do something that’s fun, how’s that going to go over. Fortunately, we created these so they felt like they were coming from the kids and not from authority figures.

1998 commercial • I’m 14
This TV spot actually came from the radio script I had developed. When director, Tom Oliphant saw it he had the kids recite these lines too and we got two commercials out of one shoot. One of the golden moments in my career was when I was driving some inner city kids home and the radio commercial kicked on. I watched in my rear view mirror as they mouthed along with the words. We got through their “You can’t tell me what to do” barriers!
